Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994) is the biggest Brazilian landscape architect, father of modern landscaping (the art of designing gardens and exterior spaces). He was also a painter, ecologist, naturalist, print-maker and musician.
With architects Oscar Niemeyer, Lucio Costa and the Communist president Jocelino Kubitchek, he was involved into building and shaping new Brazilian cities of the 1950’s.
He created Rio de Janeiro’s worldwide famous black and white street stones, which are modeling every area of the city in a special way, from Ipanema’s dots to Copacabana’s waves...
He was also a great master of landscape architecture, taking part in dozens of expeditions in Amazonia, to discover unknow plants and flowers species. Today, more than 20 Brazilian plants bear his name.
In 1949, he started to build and design his own house and garden near Rio de Janeiro… A precious paradise, masterpiece of Brazilian landscape over 365 000m² … The garden displays made of more than 3 500 different plants species, from Amazonia and other world parts, mixed up with modern architecture elements…
